Happy 18th Birthday, Annoying Pepper!

Although I might not like you most of the time, always remember that I love you with all my heart.

To the PBB Loisa of Bernardo-Casimiro,

Welcome to the 'legal age', sistah! Time flies so fast, doesn't it? I remember how small you were when you were a baby. You're freaking cute! I couldn't even contain myself those times. I was pinching your chubby arms and legs. You might not even remember it but I also took care of you. Duh! I'm your elder sistah! It's my responsibility to watch over you, to protect you - well somehow.

'Legal age' - how do you define this? Anyway, I know you know what's right and what's wrong. You're old enough to see and experience the outside world, away from your comfort zone. We all know how tough and decisive you are. I don't want to say this but you're the most talented sibling among the five of us. I know you're still in the stage of finding yourself, looking for your path to success. However, keep in mind that being a talented individual is something to cherish on. Because it's an element that will easily lead you to the path that you want. After all, your talents are your likes, am I right?

You might not perceive this every time but you're so lucky. I might have said this many times, even in a joking manner, but it's definitely true. Other than the stuff you get, you're lucky that you can eat many times a day. You're lucky that you can sip hot green tea every night. You're lucky that you're in a happy household. You're lucky that you get to study in a prestigious university in the Philippines. You're luck that you gain a lot of love from people who deem you as a significant person in their lives.

First of all, frankly speaking, don't long for a guy because it's not worth it. Focus on yourself. Love yourself. Don't go overboard. Don't compare yourself to other gals out there. You're unique. You're beautifully made. Don't take your life for granted and waste it on thinking of someone who might not even think of you. It hurts, doesn't it? It's a mere possibility. Deal with it. Anyway, you want to be a film director, aim for it! Go for it! Someone better will go for you no matter what happens. After all, you're simply an 18-year old girl who should just focus on her studies, on achieving her dreams, on continuously aiming for success. Trust me, it's all more worth it.

Again, happy birthday, sistah! I might not like you most of the time. I admit that I get envious of you because of my insecurities and whatnot, you know? But always remember that I love you with all my heart, especially your armpit and pimply face. Haha!

Towelhead by Alicia Erian
It is August 1990. Saddam Husein has just invaded Kuwait, and Jasira’s mother has bought her daughter a one-way ticket to Texas to live with her strict Lebanese father. Living in a neat model home in Charming Gates, just outside of Houston, Jasira struggles with her father’s rigid lifestyle and the racism of her classmates, who call her “towelhead.” For the first time, the painful truth hits her: she’s an Arab. Her aching loneliness and growing frustration with her parents’ conflicting rules drive her to rebel in very dangerous ways. Most disturbingly, she becomes sexually obsessed with the bigoted army reservist next door, who alternately cares for, excites, and exploits her.

Alicia Eran’s work has appeared in Playboy, Zoetrope, Nerve, The Iowa Review, The New York Times Magazine, Penthouse, and other publications. She is the author of The Brutal Language of Love, a short story collection. This is her first novel.

Who Speaks for Islam? What A Billion Muslims Really Think by John L. Esposito & Dalia Mogahed
Are we on the verge of an all-out war between the West and 1.3 billion Muslims? When the media searches for an answer to that question, they usually overlook the actual views of the world’s Muslims.

Who Speaks for Islam? is about this silenced majority. This book is the product of the Gallup World Poll’s massive, multiyear research study. As part of this groundbreaking project, Gallup conducted tens of thousands of interviews with residents of more than 35 nations that are predominantly Muslim or have significant Muslim populations.

Gallup posed questions that are on the minds of millions: Is Islam to blame for terrorism? Why is there so much anti-Americanism in the Muslim world? Who are the extremists? Where are the moderates? What do Muslim women really want?

Grounded in Gallup World Poll data, not in contentions rhetoric, Who Speaks for Islam? brings data-driven evidence - the voices of a billion Muslims, not those of individual “experts” or “extremists” - to one of the most heated and consequential debates of our time.

Diversity and Pluralism in Islam: Historical and Contemporary Discourses amongst Muslims by Zulfikar Hirji
For more than fourteen hundred years Muslims have held multiple and diverging views about many aspects of their religious tradition including religious authority, ritual practice, political power, law and governance, civic life, and the form and content of individual and communal expressions. Muslims have regularly debated amongst themselves about these issues. Despite the diversity amongst Muslims and the plurality of understandings about Islam, Muslims are frequently portrayed as internally homogenous and monolithic. This book challenges such propositions by examining the ways in which Muslims debate amongst themselves about matters of common concern, the processes by which they discursively construct notions of self, other and community, and the socio-cultural tools they employ in so doing.

The contributions of J. W. Allan, John Bowen, Patrice Brodeur, Zulfikar Hirji, R. Kevin Jaques, Dominique-Sila khan, Roman Loimeier and Roy P. Mottahedeh examine the implicit and explicit discourses on difference amongst Muslims in Indonesia, Iran, India, the historical Middle East, Coastal East Africa, Senegal, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. The studies in this volume approach the issues of Muslim plurality and pluralism from a wide range of disciplines including anthropology, history, literature, political theory, comparative religions and Islamic studies. This book will appeal to scholars and readers interested in exploring Muslim diversity, pluralism, and how human societies contend with plurality.

Procrastination: Why You Do It, What to Do About It by Jane B. Burka, PhD & Lenora M. Yuen, PhD

Yuen offer a probing, sensitive, and at times humorous look at a problem that affects everyone: students and scientists, secretaries and executives, homemakers and salespeople. The authors offer a practical, tested program to overcome procrastination by achieving set goals, managing time, enlisting support, and handling stress. Burka and Yuen even provide tips on living and working with the procrastinators you may know.

Wise, effective, and easy to use, this new edition shows why for 25 years Procrastination has been an immediate must-have for anyone who puts things off until tomorrow.

Rewire Your Brain: Think Your Way to a Better Life by John B. Arden, PhD
How to rewire your brain to improve virtually every aspect of your life-based on the latest research in neuroscience and psychology on neuroplasticity and evidence-based practices.

This book shows you how you can rewire parts of the brain to feel more positive about your life, remain calm during stressful times, and improve your social relationships. Written by a leader in the field of Brain-Based Therapy, it teaches you how to activate the parts of your brain that have been underactivated and calm down those areas that have been hyperactivated so that you feel positive about your life and remain calm during stressful times. You will also learn to improve your memory, boost your mood, have better relationships, and get a good night sleep.

1. Reveals how cutting-edge developments in neuroscience, and evidence-based practices can be used to improve your everyday life
2. Other titles by Dr. Arden include: Brain-Based Therapy-Adult, Brain-Based Therapy-Child,Improving Your Memory For Dummies and Heal Your Anxiety Workbook

(Happy) New Year Or Nah?

Heunginjimun, Seoul, South Korea (2015)
(It feels 2017! Hehe!)

Today marks the 1st day of year 2017! (Yay!)

Well, not in other countries, dude!

A lot of things happened last year and I find it surreal. It's like a bag of colorful marbles that accidentally fell off a huge vacuum, like in a split second it's gone! That's what I generally feel when I go back to the past. But this time, reminiscing 2016 goes beyond that feeling. To picture it out using the analogy, the bag of marbles fell off the vacuum but this time with an indescribable liquid. I went with the flow without knowing its consequence. I let my destiny decide for me, which shouldn't ever happen again because it was totally irking.

Should I say that 2017 is the year to change the course of destiny? But I should've taken the action before. Yeah, I should've. But it's too late and today is 2017. Or should I go to US now because it's still 2016 there? Hmmm... I can do that. It's reasonable yet when I get there it's 2017 already. Now the idea is useless. LOL!

The concept of time and space is subjective. It's up to me, I guess, to avoid thinking of day, week, month, and year. I just have to focus on the present, on reality. But it's going to be tough, especially that the world has been subjectively compressed by the concept.

Happy New Year or nah? I guess I should grasp everything and compose myself. There's no point on overthinking about the philosophy of time and space. This year, I should do better than the previous one. It won't kill me if I will subject myself wholly into it, will it?

What's the point of all this? LOL! Anyway, part of changing my destiny is to write on this blog, to share to everyone what's in my mind, what I feel, everything! I won't subscribe to hateful comments, only to the ones that will make me better. Yas! I'm continuously exploring myself and reality, in this case through writing.

Happy New Year, particularly to peoples who celebrate it! Hehe!
